Blog Post: Thanks for the Memories Player 1

So today is national sibling day and I figured I would make this since I owe much of my love of games today to my siblings.

I am the youngest in my family, when we used to play games I was one of those people that would always be player 2 for years of my life, or not even playing because of whatever game it was didn't have multiplayer. I had pretty good siblings when it came to gaming, and I don't think I ever was the victim of the famous unplugging the second controller and letting me be "player 2", at least to my knowledge...

I got very good at just sitting and watching my siblings play games and was able to experience many games stories I would have never been able to experience by myself, as I sucked horribly at games when I was younger and couldn't even read really when I first started playing games. I can remember sitting and watching Ecco the Tides of Time and freaking out the first time you see Medusa (big octopus/jellyfish combo monster thingy, not the snake headed one), exploring the worlds of the Sonic games and wondering what the next crazy robot boss was that Robotnik was going to attack us in, collecting Jiggies and musical notes in Banjo-Kazooie and pooping plenty of blue eggs at enemies, having to run and get paper and pencils to write down the 30 digit code to get back to whatever level you were on in the game because it didn't save, and many other adventures through many other games. And all those great adventures came from just sitting there and watching my siblings play.

I can even remember one of the reasons I wanted to be able to read was so I wouldn't need one of my siblings with me in order to play any game with words in it like Ocarina of Time or Mario Party (yes I loved the Mario Party games and still enjoy the first 3 and will gladly play and fight you any day, but I get to be Yoshi!)

As I got older my love of games grew, as I wanted to be able to make my own experiences that I remembered from watching my siblings play games or playing with them, and be able to finally surpass them or beat them as I was the person who would always come in last place when we would play things. It's an interesting feeling now being the one who always wins and is player 1 when in your younger years you couldn't even read the text of the game without help... No one but a younger sibling can really explain what it feels like to finally be able to be player 1 and get first pick of what character you want to play or what stage you play on or weapons you use after years of always being last or player 2.

I have gone back over the years and have beaten all the games I used to sit and watch my siblings play over the years, partially because I loved the games and partially so I could "beat" their times or scores or whatever (and many times I got more of the collectibles than they did as well or beat their times for completion in many games so HAH!) Some of them I have played so many times now I can almost walk through the entire game in my mind and know where to find many of the collectibles or what codes to enter for certain cheat codes or what item is located and where. Those are just some of the memories I have all because of those times when I first started watching my siblings play games.

There are tons of other memories I will always have of playing games with siblings but it would take too long to even put down on this blog so instead I just say thanks to my siblings for all the great memories over the years and for starting my love for games which has allowed me to have amazing adventures from exploring the dungeons of hell to rescuing that princess in another castle for the hundredth time, I will always have those times from when I still sucked at games and had to get my sibling to help me through the game.

How about any of you reading this? Do you have any good stories of when you were player 2 even when your sibling was playing a single player game? Or what about a funny story you have from killing them in Goldeneye?

Let me know in the comments below.

Regards.
