Blog Post: Forgotten Gem: Rallisport Challenge 2

When gamers talk about the masterful game developer DICE, they usually think of none other than the Battlefield franchise. Many of us also think of Mirror's Edge (another wonderful game and a personal favorite of my own).

When gamers talk about the racing genre, they usually think of the current heavy hitters: Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, Grid, and Dirt.

But in 2004 DICE and racing came together on the original Xbox in what remains one of my favorite racing games to this day: Rallisport Challenge 2.

The current crop of racing games are obviously more powerful technologically, but at the time Rallisport Challenge 2 had amazing graphics, and the car handling was awesome.

I have to say that the handing of the cars still just feels right to me. The graphics still look great if you can get your original Xbox using a component cable and set it to widescreen.

Why do I like this game so much? Well, when going at top speeds the cars always feel on the edge of losing control, but are not too difficult to control like a more realism-based racing sim might be.

The game has several modes including time attack, single race, career, and multiplayer. Multiplayer can no longer be played as Xbox Live no longer supports the the original Xbox.

However, as a single player type of gaming guy, my favorite is always the career. The career consists of Amateur, Pro, Champion, and Superrally.

Within each career level is one of the highlights of the game: an extremely varied set of events including Rallycross, Crossover, Rally, Hill Climb, and Ice Racing.

My favorites are the Rally and Hill Climb events. These are the longer races, and you really feel like you are on an adventure climbing the hills of Mesa Roja and Monte Carlo, or speeding through the green fields of Ashford Keep in Britain, or the red clay of Cooper Hill in Australia.

Another feature of the game is that you can play any of your own music during the races. Just rip your favorite CDs to the Xbox, and select the soundtrack you want. RC2 also has its own techno soundtrack which is quite enjoyable. I recommend something exhilarating and a little bit crazy to get your race on.

It is also worth noting that World Rally Championship racing, which is the real world racing that this game is based on, is tremendously enjoyable to watch.

So, if you want an enjoyable racing experience that you can jump right into, Rallisport Challenge 2 (an original Xbox exclusive) is a forgotten gem.
