Blog Post: My Tremendously Stupid Backlog Challenge

We’ve all got them. Mine totals somewhere in the hundreds. I’m purchasing fewer games these days in a foolhardy attempt to save up money for a move. If said plans work out, it’s also not too practical to haul my entire game collection across the U.S.. It’s time to begin the maddening “grind” of chipping away at my massive backlog.

In the name of practicality and fun, I’ve decided to make a challenge of it. Below are five games I intend to beat or feel content with by year’s end. When I’ve either completed them, or given up because I’m no longer enjoying myself, I’ll post a pseudo-critique of each individual game. If and when I get through these five, I’ll make another post like this with another five games.

These aren't in any sort of order, so I’ll likely jump around the list.

  • Bayonetta (Wii U)- I was about 7 chapters in a month ago and have not gone back. I tend not to play a whole lot of character action, but I want to know what the genre has to offer me.

  • Analogue: A Hate Story (PC)- I’m a big visual novel guy and I’m really looking forward to Christine Love’s Ladykiller in a Bind. I played it at PAX East, but that’s the extent of my experience with her games.

  • Asura’s Wrath (PS3)- I played the demo long, long ago and rather enjoyed myself. Picked it up in one of my many abuses of Gamestop’s Buy 2 Get 1 Free on used games.

  • Resident Evil 4 (Wii)- I’ve never played a Resident Evil. Horrible of me, I know. But it seems like it would be up my alley and I’ve heard the Wii version is great.

  • Valiant Hearts: The Great War (PS4)- Maybe I’m cheating since I’m currently playing it, but I want to make sure I finish. Plenty of chatter surrounded it last year and I tend to enjoy the smaller games Ubisoft develops.

Wish me luck. I have a terrible habit of not following through on attempts to clear my backlog, but this time I’m far more motivated than I’ve ever been.
